SPRING/SUMMER 2021 WOMENSWEAR PRINT & PATTERN TRENDS

Updated: Sep 3, 2021

WE IDENTIFY THE KEY EMERGING WOMENSWEAR PRINT TRENDS TO KNOW FOR SS 21

A NEW FOUND FEMININITY

The shift away from edgier, streetwear influences sees a renewed interest and desire for femininity, bringing a wave of pretty florals, delicate beauty and artistic design.

From watercolour washes to expressive and creative print, artistic techniques give fabric prints a new lease of life for Spring / Summer 2021.

We have identified the nine key print and pattern directional looks for the season in our comprehensive, detailed Print and Pattern forecast and it is available for immediate download

1. FLORAL BLUR

Feminine florals are updated with soft-focus filters and blurred filters. Vintage florals are refreshed and pretty blooms are given a digital approach for application on Summer weight fabrics.

2. DIGITAL SKINS

Animal prints move into skin-like texture and patterns, with less apparent animal print. They are updated with digital and pixellated artworks as well as new colour combinations.

Less obvious and bleached and blurred, these prints are a key look for SS21.

3. TIE DYE

Tie Dye has been successful and is set to continue with the addition of stripe formations and pinstripes.

New approaches to placement and colour combinations are key.

4. PARADISE

Tropicals are on the increase, with Versace's catwalk show being a key driver and vacation styles becoming more and more popular. Exotic botanicals and Eastern flora are important for destination-inspired pattern.

5. RETRO BLOOM

60's and 70's references emerge, bringing back vintage prints for transitional collection development. Small and large scale blends are developing. Retro themes filter down into commercial markets with slogans and graphic tees.

Painterly prints in inky washes and brush stroke patterns emerge stronger and are the perfect way to echo the trend for individuality. Opt for expressive, painterly florals as the demand grows for artistic aesthetic.

7. WAXED

Driven by Christian Dior, batik style prints will continue as the interest in traditional handcraft and artisan looks grows.

Bi-colours and small scale batiks have the broadest appeal for commercial markets.

8. NEW POLKA

The overwhelming success of polka dots breeds abstract, irregular spots. Use multi-scale mixes, large scale and layered print for newness. Give polka dot newness with feminine colour ways and apply to sheer fabrications.

9. PAISLEY PARK

Commercial paisleys continue in warm neutrals that elevate summer looks. Linear and pared back paisleys take hold and are the perfect solution to the feminine maxi dress.
