WHY COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN SKETCHES ARE SO IMPORTANT WITHIN THE FASHION INDUSTRY
A flat sketch or fashion CAD is a two - dimensional technical drawing which illustrates a garment with basic solid lines.
It is basically a "blueprint" of your design — much like an architect's blueprint for a house before they can begin to construct it.
The word "flat" refers to the way that they are drawn: imagine the garment is lying flat on a table so that you are viewing all the details from either the front or the back.
Aside from front/back views, some brands will include drawings of details or the side views to show how panels travel around the body or how sections of the garment should be constructed.
WHY THEY ARE VITAL FOR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT?
Fashion technical drawings are an essential part of the garment specification sheet or technical pack, they give your pattern-maker and your manufacturer's sewing teams all the information they need about the technical components of a piece.
For the people responsible to turn your idea into a finished, fit for purpose product, they need detailed clear drawings so they can produce your vision accurately.
It is expected and customary when you draw these technical drawings to do a front and back views of your product at a minimum.
But if you are creating a complicated garment or you’re developing bags, shoes or jewellery, additional views will need to be provided to ensure that your products are re-created from the drawing as you’ve designed them.
HOW FASHION FLATS ARE USED
Technical drawings are an important component to aid the conversion of your design sketch into a usable product.
Your pattern cutters will need these drawings in order to create a pattern that fits well on the body, is in proportion and is balanced, and is aesthetically pleasing.
Technical drawings can also be used on line sheets when showing your products to shops. They’re useful for representing a simple, graphic rendition of your product and this enables the buyer to really see the detail.
