Behind fashion maximalism, theatrical colour, symbolism and fantasy are becoming ways to restore feeling to an increasingly optimised world

The obvious reading of fashion in 2026 is that maximalism has returned. Colour is becoming louder, silhouettes more theatrical, embellishment more visible and the runway increasingly comfortable with feathers, fantasy, surrealism and excess. Yet describing this simply as another swing of the pendulum away from minimalism misses the more interesting cultural shift underneath it.
What is returning is not necessarily an appetite for more. It is an appetite for meaning.
