For much of fashion history, the waist has acted as the dependable centre of the dress. Whether tightly corseted, softly belted or only suggested through seam placement, it has traditionally provided the point from which proportion is organised. The bodice is understood in relation to it, the skirt expands beneath it and the body remains legible through the garment’s construction.
