For several seasons, luxury has been on its best behaviour. It has whispered, edited and reduced, wrapping itself in cashmere, removing the logo and perfecting the exact shade of expensive brown. The dominant codes have been restraint, discretion and control: the impeccable coat, the beautifully weighted trouser, the anonymous leather bag whose value is visible only to those trained to recognise it. What began as a meaningful rejection of spectacle gradually became the industry’s preferred language of taste.
