90s minimalism
1990s minimalism made restraint feel authoritative. With colour and decoration reduced, silhouette, balance and the relationship between garment and body carried the visual weight.


The great misconception about 90s minimalism is that it was simple because there was less to look at. In reality, reduction raised the standard. Once embellishment, obvious styling tricks and decorative distraction were removed, everything else became exposed: the fall of a shoulder, the depth of an armhole, the relationship between torso and trouser, the weight of the cloth and the exact point at which a hem interrupted the body.
